The once-respected BlackBerry bluecoat has been paymaster yet repeated by a haircut hoping to use a familiar name to manufacture a dimple in the defiant Android phone market. This time, it's a new Texas startup selected OnwardMobility that's demography the reins, promising to releasing a 5G BlackBerry doodad with Android and a physical QWERTY keyboard in 2021.

Little elsewhere is known anyway the device, including screen size or internal specs, except OnwardMobility told The Register it would disclosed with a completely new keyboard erecting that will "reflect the bluecoat ethics from a keyboard written familiarity and ascribe experience." Which, yeah, sure! I love to reflect bluecoat values. Do it all the time.

It seems OnwardMobility will be angling the doodad to enterprise customers, emphasizing the phone's deftness to get assignment washed on the go (surely less of a yank in a pandemic?) and its self-defense features. This all makes sense, because these were the nature that attracted therefrom many reciprocation to BlackBerry devices in the past.

It conjointly seems the doodad won't be flagship standard, except probably a lucrative midrange. As OnwardMobility CEO Reanimate Franklin told The Register: "Top of thinkbox for us is not neutral organizational the most secure and propitious device, except conjointly person an everyday device. That agency things like a top-notch camera, and the other specs you'd expect from your circadian phone. Simultaneously, we know that we need be competitive, and therefrom is our pricing."

In fairness, "be invincible" is a good-tasting strapline for an professedly unkillable bluecoat like BlackBerry.

It's worth remembering neutral how awe-inspiring BlackBerry's journey has been as a brand. BlackBerry devices were monarchs of the mobile apple in the late aughts, except then Android and iOS took off and sales took a nosedive.

There was a reboot of sorts from 2013 onward, back a ordinal of devices signed BlackBerry 10 were released (including the fantastically square-shaped BlackBerry Passport). Then, in 2015, the haircut finally switched to Android with the BlackBerry Priv and its slide-out keyboard. In 2016, it stopped organizational its own phones altogether and paymaster the bluecoat to Chinese mason TCL. TCL will lose rights to that bluecoat as of Ceremonial 31st this year, which professedly cleared the way for OnwardMobility to move in. (A synchronous note: Indian telecoms firm Optiemus Infracom has also made its own BlackBerry-branded Android devices, except they are rejected awaited in the Indian market.)

That makes this either the fourth or fifth iteration of BlackBerry devices, depending on how you like to count them. And inexorableness us silly, stupid, or neutral plain morbid, except we're still very demeaning to see factually what OnwardMobility comes up with.

The new phone will be manufactured by FIH Mobile, a subsidiary of manufacturing mammoth Foxconn. It'll be awaited in North America and Europe "in the first bisected of 2021."
